The De Waal Difference
The farm has been in the hands of the De Waal family since 1864.
The first De Waals arrived in South Africa in 1715 and they have been farming since then, exactly 300 years ago.
The De Waal family has a rich history of winemaking, spanning 9 generations.
The first highway from Stellenbosch to Cape Town, dating back to around 1700, still exists and this dirt road runs through the farm.
The De Waal family are Pioneers of Pinotage. CT de Waal was the first person to produce a wine from the Pinotage cultivar in 1941.
De Waal makes their flagship Pinotage from 70-year-old bush vines, the oldest existing Pinotage vineyard in the world!
The Cape Dutch Homestead dates back to 1791 and is one of only three in South Africa with a Rococo gable. This is a more decorative and playful style of architecture than the Baroque gable.
On the De Waal Estate three different styles of Pinotage are available to taste and compare, made in a classical style, from entry-level to the flagship Top of the Hill Pinotage.
The Top of the Hill Pinotage goes through stringent quality control, if it does not match up to previous exceptional vintages, the wine will not appear under the Top of the Hill label.
De Waal is one of only 10 producers who have won the prestigious ABSA top 10 Pinotage competition 6 times or more, since its inception in 1997.
De Waal has received the President’s Award for Export Achievement in 1995, signed by the late president, Mr Nelson Mandela.
